Pastoral ministry is about serving until you drop, get up, go again, drop again, etc, etc. Leadership, whether it is in business or church leadership is all about motivating and serving. It's a cycle that never ends as long as you take the reins. Jeremiah did this for 50 years (well, a little different, but....). He had ZERO converts, lots of discouragement, and was sick to death of his ministry. Yet he knew he was called, remained obedient, loved God, and in the end loved the disobedient. Pastoral ministry is about sacrificing yourself....ALL of yourself. Just as Jesus did. He too got wearied and annoyed. And He STILL intercedes for ALL the saints, hourly. His ministry hasn't stopped. If you're tired of serving, loving, and shepherding then resign and go work in a flower shop, but as long as you're a pastor IT WILL BE HARD -- from a fellow pastor of 26 years.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914026.post-91325072557890624892013-11-12T05:04:03.673-06:002013-11-12T05:04:03.673-06:00As a pastor, I can definitely relate. The church is now as strong as it has ever been. But I feel taken for granted. I'm tired of mean-spirited people. I'm tired of the way church folks let mean-spirited people say whatever they like without challenging them. I try to remind myself that I follow one who carried a cross, and that does help. But, truth be told, I'm still hurt and angry. Sometimes I'd like to walk away and say something not too nice on my way out the door.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914026.post-72501714383366895082012-11-23T14:38:17.535-06:002012-11-23T14:38:17.535-06:00I’m thankful too for W.Carrier for inventing the A...I’m thankful too for W.Carrier for inventing the AC! Worrying over a certain problem gives me a reason to do my best to create a solution for it. You may find it strange, but there are really some people who are somewhat motivated by distress. Moreover, it’s great how good you are thinking about the other’s comfort. Well, if you can share the comfort that an AC can offer, then why not? I've hung in, but recently took a three month sabbatical as my health took a nosedive. It was either extended time off or leave completely. The church was gracious and gave me the time I needed. I came back renewed, but . . . I am now back to where I was, except now I'm preaching three services on Sundays, teaching two studies Sunday evenings, seen my work load expand gigantically--and see my discouragement grow again. It's very, very troubling.

The same patterns are here. People get upset, don't talk directly to me, and then just disappear. I'm supposed to be all things to all people, and end up emptied out and unable to function.

There's just got to be a better way to do this.Christy Thomashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16264749319255974812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914026.post-3538101646974428952012-09-18T06:09:42.895-05:002012-09-18T06:09:42.895-05:00I feel your pain. Just spent time with my mom and was reminded that in many ways I am also a mom at school. Your post about the morning tonic reminded me that I play an important role in the lives of those that I teach. I am preparing them for the world not just for science. Thanks for reminding me that I too need rest so that I can do what I do best as a teacher. Glad you are enjoying the time with family, but also look forward to hearing new sermons from you as you do what you've been called by God to do.Angie Hammondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10064017427849522392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914026.post-5742524863531065142011-05-02T20:23:09.259-05:002011-05-02T20:23:09.259-05:00We already have those people who will lay down the...We already have those people who will lay down their lives for good. They are the men and women that answer the 911 calls, the military, the first responders, the good samaritan who risks their life to save another. You just don't hear about them as often as you do the evil doers, but they are there. Oh, I forgot ones we don't think of often, the ministers who while not literally dying to do good, in reality lose their own personal lives so that others may live.
Yes we have plenty of people laying down lives for good, we just need to spend more time recognizing them instead of the ones doing evil.

Finally, we just need to keep the faith.Angie Hammondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10064017427849522392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914026.post-77391380079288166522011-04-12T16:49:35.224-05:002011-04-12T16:49:35.224-05:00Part of a little prayer, I had my children use eac...Part of a little prayer, I had my children use each Sunday as I served as Acolyte mom, was "Come Holy Spirit and fill our hearts with love, as we carry the symbol of your light. And, let us take that love back out into our world".

The children I worked with are now young adults, and sadly I don't have that much contact with them. I would like to know if they still remember that little prayer. This week, my Physics classes watched the latest Nova production called Japan's Killer Quake.
It told the story of the events that took place during and the hours after the quake and tsunami hit Japan.

What struck all of us was that what we saw on the screen looked like just another disaster thriller movie. The only catch was we knew it was real. I can tell you this, not a single one of them put their head down to sleep. And today they wanted to see the rest of it since we couldn't finish the program in one class period. I had warned them before the video that it was very disturbing (since we knew lives were lost) but that no bodies were shown in it.

My point here is that in everything we do, nothing seems real to us anymore. We can see things on TV or cell phones or computers and it can be a world away from us and we see it but it doesn't touch us.
It is not real unless we think about it being real.

This week my students watched a video we knew was real and it touched them. And to be honest with you, it also touched me their teacher. I found that I had trouble wrapping my mind around how real it was.

I know this post was not about our eating habits, but I think it fits in with the theme of excess in our lives.

In the video, it talked about how well prepared Japan was for earthquakes and yet it was not good enough when this one hit.

Finally the last statements on the video were that all we had to do to see our future was look at Japan and then realize that they were well prepared and we are not nearly as well prepared should we have an earthquake like the one of March 11th.

Sobering thoughts just like your thoughts about our diets and our future with type two diabetes.

It is very apparent that we need God these days more than ever before.Angie Hammondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10064017427849522392noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36914026.post-35151375507531731972011-04-05T21:24:56.840-05:002011-04-05T21:24:56.840-05:00I am in agreement on the getting old is not for si...I am in agreement on the getting old is not for sissies. And I'd like to add that a teacher's job seems never ending as well. I too feel as if I need a break from the pressure of my world. Admittedly, he is older, and his activity level is low, and he feels the need to stay in touch with the world. On the other hand, he reads lots of novels and likes to play scrabble. There is some kind of blending going on here that fascinates me.

Maybe people need to learn to make smoothies, so to speak, to keep life from becoming so one-sided. Yes, there is a time and a place for the techno-world as well as one for the lighter side of the peace of simplicity and quiet, creative thought, but it's important not to get totally stuck in one.

We should recognize the "realness" of other people. It would probably have helped me to understand how to handle what I had to do today in regard to discipline in the classroom. I had to write a referral to ISS today because a student did not want to correct their behavior when given an opportunity to correct their actions instead of getting into trouble.
I of course did what I needed to do but the end result was not one that I desired. The student did not do as requested and then left the classroom cussing. Notice I said as requested because I did not demand it. I gave choices and unfortunately the wrong choice was made.

Also another reminder to me that I am not the savior but only a teacher. But in the classroom I too am the one with authority and I must hold those who choose to break the rules accountable or I have failed them and myself.

Thanks Christy for reminding me that I play a role in the lives of the children I serve each day.

Only one other comment on this post.
